Four Temperaments Test

The four temperaments are one of the oldest ideas about personality, going back to ancient Greek medicine. This test shows your personal mix of all four.

How this test works

The four temperaments describe broad patterns of mood and energy. Sanguine people are lively, sociable, and optimistic. Choleric people are energetic, ambitious, and quick to take charge. Melancholic people are thoughtful, sensitive, and detail-minded. Phlegmatic people are calm, steady, and easygoing. Nobody is just one type; everyone has some of each, in different amounts. For each statement, rate how well it describes you on a scale from 1 (not like me at all) to 5 (very much like me). Answer based on how you usually are, not how you feel today. Your result shows your strongest temperament and the full balance of all four.

Frequently asked questions

What are the four temperaments?

The four temperaments are sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic. Each describes a broad style of energy and emotion: sanguine is outgoing and cheerful, choleric is driven and decisive, melancholic is thoughtful and detail-minded, and phlegmatic is calm and easygoing. Most people recognize themselves mainly in one, with a second as a strong influence.

Where does the idea come from?

The idea is very old. Ancient Greek physicians, often linked with Hippocrates, believed health depended on a balance of four bodily humors, and the Roman physician Galen later connected these to personality styles. That medical theory has long been abandoned. Today the four temperaments are used only as a simple, memorable way to talk about personality.

Is this test scientific?

No. This test is not a validated psychological or clinical assessment and should not be used to diagnose anything or make important decisions about someone. Think of it as a tool for self-reflection and conversation. If a description rings true, use it as a starting point for thinking about your habits, not as a final verdict.

What is a blend?

Very few people fit just one temperament. Your blend is your highest-scoring temperament followed by your second-highest, such as sanguine-melancholic. The order matters: the first describes your main style, and the second shows how that style is colored. A choleric-sanguine person reads quite differently from a sanguine-choleric one.

Can my temperament change?

Your basic leanings tend to be fairly stable, but how you express them can change a lot over time. Age, experience, relationships, and deliberate practice all shape how you act. You may also score differently depending on your mood or life stage when you take the test, so it is worth retaking it now and then.

How is this different from other personality tests?

Many modern personality tests measure several separate traits on detailed scales or sort people into many types. The four temperaments model is much simpler, with only four styles and their blends. That simplicity makes it easy to remember and discuss with family or friends, though it captures less detail than longer questionnaires.

Is the test free?

Yes. The test and all results, including your blend description, are completely free. You do not need to create an account or provide an email address to see your results.
